Bertha’s Books
By W.L. Newkirk
Set in a small, urban bookstore, a target of gentrification, in the minutes before it is slated to close for good, Bertha’s Books tells the story of three women from different generations as they confront a future profoundly altered by the bookstore’s closing. The central character, Abby, raised on the street because of her mother’s death from drug abuse and her father’s mental illness, must face leaving the only refuge she has ever known and, in the process, stare down the demons of her family legacy. Bertha’s Books is a play about chosen family, the kindness of others, and redemption.
